This question, I believe, is one that Barbara Brown Taylor asks, and I love it—and you know I love her. If you haven’t read her Altar in the World, Leaving Church, or Learning to Walk in the Dark (among others--everything she writes is great), then I’m jealous of you because you have some truly beautiful and soul-nourishing reading ahead of you.
But back to the question: last week with friends on Cape Cod, we sat on the water and asked this question, and it opened a conversation between us I’m still thinking about. These things that are saving our lives can be big things or small things, weighty or light-hearted, but what I love is that the question invites us to check in with our deeper selves for just a moment, to peer into our own hearts and ask ourselves about what’s bringing meaning, joy, hope, or even just what’s keeping us afloat on difficult days.
