All Things Fisherman Summer
Two trips to the lake this month means all I can think about is how much I love this summer's trend...
Tomorrow is my favorite day of the year: the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, because Memorial Day Weekend is the kickoff to my favorite season. To be honest, it doesn’t feel particularly summery here in New York right now, because we still have more than a month of school, and it’s been raining cats and dogs all week, but I did get to the lake twice this month, and being there got me into a serious summer mood.
And in particular, a fisherman summer mood. I can’t tell you the AMOUNT of people in my life who have texted me about the fisherman summer trend—articles like these: Town & Country, InStyle, AD.
All things cozy/beachy? Striped shirts and boat shoes? Navy and brass and nautical accents everywhere? THIS IS MY MOMENT!
Generally speaking, I don’t think of myself as any kind of expert on fashion or trends or home design, but fisherman summer might be my actual zone of genius, as they say, so settle in for possibly the longest post I’ve ever written, and certainly more links than I’ve ever posted. Can you tell I’m excited about this one? If I can’t be at the beach for another six weeks or so, I can still dream about all things sand/boat/beach/nautical…

These are things I wear every day right now:
I definitely tend toward a uniform, and these days it starts with these three things: a striped shirt, olive twill pants or jeans, and boat shoes or sandals.
I have a whole stack of striped shirts, but this Kule striped shirt is my go-to, and I wear it with these Alex Mill pants and these Sperry boat shoes about three times a week.
I got this J Crew barn jacket for our Jackson Hole trip, and I was happy to have it at the lake last weekend and also at baseball games in the city the last couple weeks—it’s been such a rainy spring and this jacket has saved me.
Last summer Aaron bought me this Jane Win coin necklace and I wear it every day with these Gorjana Crew Helium hoops. I’m in a big baseball hat phase right now, and I especially love this Oyster hat—I got it at Kitty’s in Hudson when we were up there with the boys over Christmas break, so it reminds me of such good memories.
And the bad news is that dropped my phone recently and cracked my old case—but the good news is I got to replace it with this new little cutie: Katie Kime Phone case.
I wear two winter perfumes and two summer ones, and the summer ones are these two: Margiela Beach Walk is light and salty and absolutely transports you to the sea, and Rockaway by DS & Durga is a step more intense—almost briny. I love them both.

Here are a few things I don’t have but I do have my eye on:
This fall, Annette and I went to the Seavees store when we were in Santa Barbara, and I kind of regret not buying these clogs—perfect for running out to the fruit stand or corner store, especially on a wet day. I also love these Rothy’s rope sandals and these Madewell studded espadrilles. I’ve been wanting this FP Francis pullover sweater since last year, and I love the handle especially on this Camren Mini Bag.
A couple home things:
We’re working on a fun new project at the lake so I’ve been researching how to add a nautical touch to a couple bedrooms. I love these two sets of sheets: Stinson sheets, coastal printed sheets, and I’m low-key obsessed with these Chappy Wrap blankets.
We have this rope rug outside our front door here in Brooklyn, and I love the nautical vibe even in the city. When we moved from the Midwest to NYC, we ordered this Great Lakes quilt, and we still fight over who gets it when we watch movies. :)
Of course, some reading recommendations for your fisherman summer:

And the Sea Will Tell by Vincent Bugliosi is an absolute classic. Bugliosi also wrote Helter Skelter, so you can imagine it’s got all the creepy, suspenseful vibes—in a very good way.
The Dove Another classic—our family actually took turns reading this one aloud on a family vacation when Todd and I were little. I love it.
An Embarrassment of Mangoes This one I discovered more recently, and when I recommended it to my sailing friends, they loved it as much as I did. An absolute delight.
Here are a couple really beautiful coffee table books we have—they’re all both good reading & a great way to add a little fisherman vibe to your bookshelves or coffee table:
Sailing America, At Home on the Water, The Kaufman’s Mercantile Guide
And a gorgeous cookbook:
A few more ideas (I cannot be stopped, apparently! This will be world’s longest Substack!):
Classic Fisherman’s Sweater, L.L. Bean Anchor Cardigan, Jet Set Candy Nautical Flag Charms, Vacation sunblock, Fishwife, Seabags, Sea Salt Soap , & the Nathalie Lete by the Sea collection at Anthropologie.
Happy (almost) Memorial Day Weekend—alas, we won’t be on the water this weekend, but we will gather for a picnic potluck with friends here in the city, and I’m already counting the minutes. I think we’ll bring a red pepper and goat cheese pasta and maybe mini mortadella sandwiches.
Our days are full to bursting right now, especially with both 8th grade and high school graduations (!!!), and the massive amount of events and trips and forms and celebrations that go along with those milestones.
I’m recipe testing nearly every day, which is delicious and fun—and also a whole lot of grocery shopping and dishes!—and Aaron’s getting ready for the Pastors, Priests & Guides retreat in Chicago in a couple weeks…there are still a few spots left, if you or anyone you love is in need of some space and spiritual care.
Wishing for you some peace in these busy days, some sunshine in between rainy days, and some time with people you love this holiday weekend! XO—S
